The film is divided into two parts, the first centered around Gah-in, a woman having an affair with a married man named Jun, and the second around Jun's wife Do-hee. Gah-in and Do-hee occupy separate roles, but nevertheless share their desire to reclaim their submerged identities. Gah-in, a 26-year old Korean student studying in the U.S., returns home in a mood of despair, her illicit affair with Jun having sparked feelings of depression. Too proud to be pitied, Gah-in struggles not to break down after she returns home. In the second story, Do-hee becomes pregnant after herself having an extra-marital affair. She hides RU-486 abortion pills in her luggage and takes a plane back to Korea. After a 13-year absence, Do-hee feels like an outsider. She befriends a bartender, Hee-su, who accompanies her as a stand-in for her absent husband on a visit to her grandmother. Forced to quickly decide whether to abort or to keep her unborn child, she doesn't fully understand her reborn desires. However, her despair ultimately instills in her a new sense of inspiration.
