Taehung Pictures is a film production and distribution company, one of the longest running in Korea; to be convinced of this, one only has to look at the number of collaborations it had with zealous director IM Kwon-taek – 14 movies over four decades. Initially founded by KIM Tae-su as Taechang Industries in 1966, it debuted with a participation in one of IM’s earlier works, <Miss Ok and the Divided Court> (a.k.a. <Ok-I Makes a Judge Cry>; 1966). Taechang was one of the few film companies that survived the multiple revisions of the Motion Picture Law in the 1960s, which notably required stricter criteria in terms of equipment, workforce and productivity in order to be authorized to operate. Among Taechang’s most notable films are LEE Sung-gu’s <The General’s Moustache> (1968), a critical and commercial success, and his follow-up <The Story of Chunhyang> (1971), which introduced 70 mm films to Korea, thus becoming the 5th national film industry to adopt the format.
