K-Animation BEAUTY WATER Scores 4th Place Opening

After bleeding out for the last few weeks owing to the recent COVID-19 surge, the Korean box office appears to be levelling out. Business over the past weekend was down just over 10%, with a pair of holdovers leading the way. 339,000 tickets were sold over the frame, with the local market share roughly even at 33%.

In its third week, Christopher NOLAN’s sci-fi blockbuster Tenet eased just 27%, adding 164,000 spectators (USD 1.32 million). Despite strong holds, the effect of COVID-19 has been significant, throttling the film’s possible tally, which now stand at 1.34 million entries (USD 10.32 million).

Local comedy Oh! My Gran eased 41% in its sophomore frame, selling an additional 49,000 tickets (USD 366,000). This raised the total of the NA Moon-hee vehicle to 227,000 admissions (USD 1.55 million) to date.

20th Century Fox holdover title New Mutants, a X-Men spinoff released by Disney, had a paltry debut with just 35,000 tickets (USD 267,000) sold over the weekend, and 49,000 seats (USD 367,000) filled over its first four days.

The local low-budget animation Beauty Water, after several international film festival invites, debuted in Korea with an encouraging 30,000 entries (USD 237,000) over the weekend, with 44,000 sales (USD 336,000) counted since Wednesday.

Innocence, one of the first major local films to be released during the pandemic back in early June, made a comeback to the charts, soaring from 150th to fifth place with 16,000 new sales (USD 103,000). The film has welcomed 889,000 viewers (USD 6.58 million) this summer.

The top offering this coming weekend will be the new Disney title Mulan, but the question will be whether low grosses in China and a mountain of controversy in the West and Southeast Asia will affect its Korean returns, beyond the effects of the COVID-19. Meanwhile, Tenet will likely remain one of the top draws.
