YU Ha returns to Seoul’s ganglands with Gangnam Blues, following his 2006 thriller A Dirty Carnival. Though now famous around the world due to the Psy’s global hit Gangnam Style, the South Seoul Gangnam neighborhood was mostly farmland just a few decades ago until things quickly changed in the 1970s, when gangsters and crooked politicians drove up the value of the land during a rapid development.

 

In the new film, idol star LEE Min-ho (from TV hit The Heirs) and Sunflower (2006) actor KIM Rae-won play childhood friends who become embroiled in the gangland machinations behind the construction of Gangnam. Growing up together in an orphanage, the friends are later separated during a gang-related attack, only to come face to face years later when things heat up.

 

Gangnam Blues follows a resurgence in the Korean gangster genre, which has seen recent hits such as Nameless Gangster : Rules of the Time(2011) and New World conquering the box office. With its period setting, star casting and YU’s proven ability in the genre, expectations are high for may be one of the first Korean hits of 2015.
