  • Box office Grade Report of HWANG Jung-min

HWANG Jung-min has attracted 27.46 million viewers altogether in 2015. It is the sum of the number of viewers of Ode to My Father released towards the end of 2014, Veteran, a 2015 summer blockbuster, and The Himalayas, opened last December and still in the theater. This number surpasses 24.17 million, which is the record of SONG Kang-ho made in 2013, with the addition of the viewers of The Attorney, Snowpiercer and The Face Reader.

Although Ode to My Father and Veteran both went over 10 million viewers, HWANG has not been always this great in the box office. Except for You Are My Sunshine (2005) which attracted 3.05 million viewers, most his films were better received by the critique than the box office. However, since The Unjust (2010) which earned 2.77 million admissions, his profit making performance considerably grew better.

HWANG received 4.06 million viewers with Dancing Queen in 2012, and the next year, he successfully sold 4.68 million tickets with New World. Fists of Legend (2013) and Man In Love (2014) only earned 1.74 million and 1.98 million admissions respectively, but Ode to My Father became his first 10 million viewer movie with 14.25 million movie goers, and a few months later, he showed another tremendous performance with Veteran of 13.41 million viewers.

As of 23 January, 2016, the accumulated number of viewers for The Himalayas is 7.61 million. On 3 February, A Violent Prosecutor is to open, where he teamed up with GANG Dong-won, followed by Asura directed by KIM Sung-soo and featuring, along with HWANG, JUNG Woo-sung, JU Ji-hoon and KWAK Do-won, and Battleship Island by RYOO Seung-wan, where HWANG is to perform with SO Ji-sub and SONG Joong-ki. You can’t help but wonder what record HWANG is yet to break in the coming up year.
