For the seventh year in a row, a Korean film has picked up a prize at the International Festival of Asia Cinema Vesoul. LEE Kwang-kuk’s sophomore feature A Matter of Interpretation won the Coup de Coeur Inalco Award.

 

LEE’s film met with a strong response when it premiered at the Busan International Film Festival last October before going on to Rotterdam earlier this year. Featuring SHIN Dong-mi as a frustrated stage actress who walks out of a stage rehearsal, A Matter Interpretation explores faded relationships and broken dreams through an engaging dream-filled narrative.

 

The film was awarded by the Inalco jury ‘for its poetry, oscillating between dreams and reality and which engages through its photography and humor.’ The Inalco Prize is offered annually by the National Institute of Languages from Oriental Civilisations.

 

Korean films picked up the festival’s top prize, the Cyclo d’or, in the last two years: O Muel’s Jiseul (2012) in 2013, and LEE Yong-seung’s 10 Minutes (2013) in last year. This year’s Vesoul, which took place between February 10th and 17th, also featured the Korean films Pluto (2012), Han Gong-ju (2013) and A Girl at My Door.
