  • TENET Fends Off OH! MY GRAN
  • by Pierce Conran /  Sep 08, 2020
  • Admissions Remain Low Amid Heightened Social Distancing

As Seoul and surrounding regions remained in the midst of a Level 2.5 social distancing lockdown, business was down once again as COVID-19 worries continued to clear out theaters. Admissions were down around a fifth week-on-week, with 385,000 tickets sold, while the local market share almost doubled to 35% owing to a new release.

Christopher NOLAN’s much-hyped Tenet has been positively received in Korea, and despite the public health scare it was able to hold on to most of its audience as it slowed just 36% in week two. With another 225,000 seats (USD 1.8 million), the Warner Bros film has now amassed 1.06 million entries (USD 8.17 million).

Debuting in second place was the local comedy Oh! My Gran, featuring senior star NA Moon-hee and LEE Hee-jun. The film struggled in a slow marketplace, selling just 94,000 tickets (USD 621,000) during its debut, with 135,000 viewers (USD 890,000) counted since its Wednesday launch.

Still a force on the charts in third was the summer hit DELIVER US FROM EVIL, which was down 44%. The action-thriller added 30,000 sales (USD 231,000), raising its total to 4.31 million admissions after just over a month in theaters (USD 32.19 million).

In its third week, the Japanese animation Crayon Shin-chan: Honeymoon Hurricane ~The Lost Hirochi~ receded 41% as it filled another 8,500 seats (USD 60,000), giving it 109,000 spectators (USD 745,000) so far.

Rounding out the top five was the local comedy OK! MADAM which eased 68% as it lost many of its theatres ahead of its fourth weekend. 7,000 tickets (USD 54,000) were snatched up over the frame, growing its total to 1.22 million entries (USD 9.19 million).

Tenet should remain a considerable threat in its upcoming third weekend, but it will have to fend off some new challengers, in the form of the dark local animation Beauty Water and the long-delayed Hollywood superhero title New Mutants, both of which were originally scheduled to open last week.
