  • INFINITY WAR Takes 3rd Weekend Crown
  • by Pierce Conran /  May 15, 2018
  • LOVE+SLING Wrestles 2nd-Place Debut

Business fell close to 50% at the Korean box office this past weekend as new titles were not able to unseat Disney-Marvel’s waning blockbuster in its third week. Of the 1.43 million tickets sold, America retained its advantage with 57% of sales while Korea trailed behind at 36%.

Topping the charts for a third time after a 60% slide was Avengers: Infinity War. With 783,000 new seats (USD 6.96 million) filled, the film pushed to 10.13 million admissions (USD 84.82 million). This makes the comic book team-up the 21st film to cross the ten million viewer benchmark in Korea, the fifth non-Korean film to do so, and second Marvel film after Avengers: Age of Ultron. The film should have no trouble becoming the top Marvel film in the market over the coming days.

Opening in second place was the comedy-drama LOVE+SLING with YOO Hae-jin from Lotte Entertainment which debuted with 367,000 entries (USD 3.02 million) and recorded 537,000 admissions (USD 4.34 million) over its first five days.

Crashing 69% in its sophomore frame was fellow local comedy-drama Champion with Don LEE (aka MA Dong-seok) from Warner Bros. Korea which added 137,000 viewers (USD 1.12 million) for a new total of 1.07 million spectators (USD 8.45 million) in 13 days.

Far behind in fifth place were animation holdovers from last week as The Incredible Story of the Giant Pear and Early Man added about 20,000 viewers a piece for totals of 90,000 (USD 665,000) and 116,000 admissions (USD 837,000) to date, respectively.

The Avengers will finally hand over their crown this coming weekend, as they pass it off to another Marvel superhero in the form of Deadpool 2 which currently has a comfortable lead on the presale chart ahead of its launch on Wednesday.
