  • by Pierce Conran /  Feb 21, 2017
  • THE GREAT WALL Opens in Third

A new Korean film topped the chart in a weekend that was almost level with the previous week, as two thirds of tickets sold once again went to local fare, out of a total 2.22 million sold.

Court drama New Trial, with KANG Ha-neul and JUNG Woo, from OPUS Pictures and distributed by CGV ARTHOUSE, was the top draw scoring 755,000 viewers (USD 5.55 million) in its first weekend. With decent reviews and good word of mouth the picture brought in 1.02 million spectators (USD 7.31 million) to date.

Dropping almost by half in its sophomore outing was PARK Kwang-hyun’s VR thriller Fabricated City, which added 463,000 tickets (USD 3.4 million) for a total of 1.97 million entries (USD 13.96 million).

Opening in third place with 273,000 admissions (USD 2.17 million) was the US-China co-production The Great Wall from director ZHANG Yimou. The fantasy epic scored 371,000 entries (USD 2.88 million) in its first five days.

Down another 64% was the action-comedy Confidential Assignment, which brought in another 194,000 viewers (USD 1.43 million) for a new total of 7.67 million spectators (USD 54.62 million).

Closing the top five was the new Dreamworks animation Trolls, which debuted with 184,000 tickets (USD 1.24 million) and 216,000 admissions (USD 1.43 million) since Thursday.

Way down in 12th position, the local family comedy My Little Brother, the first locally distributed film by Disney, opening with a scant 16,000 viewers (USD 112,000) over the weekend and 34,000 spectators (USD 229,000 million) since Wednesday.

New Trial will go up against Warner Bros.’ second Korean production A Single Rider, starring LEE Byung-hun and KONG Hyo-jin, this weekend, as well as M. Night Shyamalan’s Split, US action title John Wick Chapter 2 and the local sci-fi thriller Lucid Dream.
