- Star-Driven Thriller Reaches 8 Million Viewers
Business remained brisk over the weekend following the Lunar New Year holiday, with 2.24 million viewers crowding the multiplexes. A Violent Prosecutor maintained its dominant position, hoisting the market share for local films to 66%.Stars HWANG Jung-min and GANG Dong-won continued to draw in large numbers for their hit thriller A Violent Prosecutor, which added 1.36 million spectators (USD 8.97 million) following the second best opening week of all time. In 12 days, the Showbox title has amassed 8.08 million admissions (USD 53.12 million). Competition will likely knock it off the top spot next week, but the film stands a strong chance of reaching 10 million viewers.
Remaining in second place after a soft 33% slide was Dreamworks’ animated hit Kung Fu Panda 3. With another 367,929 viewers (USD 2.34 million), the toon now has a total of 3.69 million admissions (USD 23.97 million).Though it doesn’t open until this Wednesday, previews were enough to boost superhero title Deadpool to third place over the weekend, with 88,000 admissions (USD 647,525). The film is currently top of the reservations chart and should post a first place finish this coming weekend.Japanese anime Aikutsu: The Movie opened in fourth place with 79,282 spectators (USD 487,178), while Hollywood drama Carol rose 54% in fifth place during its sophomore weekend, adding 75,340 viewers (USD 523,106) for a new total of 220,716 admissions (USD 1.52 million).
