The Host Screenings Ended, Success Continues

Korea's most popular film The Host had it's last screening in Korea after attracting over 13 million viewers in 105 days since late July this year. Director BONG Joon-ho's film features a dysfunctional family trying to safe their youngest member from a monster. The monster's habitat is the Han River in Seoul and its mutation is the result of toxic waste dumped by the U.S. military.

The success of The Host continued when it swept MBC's 5th Korean Film Awards with six awards, including the major awards for Best Director and Best Film. The Film's lighting, cinematography, special effects, sound effects were also awarded.

The ceremony was held on Sunday November 20. Other main awards went to A Dirty Carnival's ZO In-sung (Best Leading Actor) and Between Love and Hate's JANG Jin-young (Best Leading Actress).

The Host actor SONG Kang-ho wasn't awarded, but according to a survey by the Korean newspaper Chosun Ilbo among producers and PR executives, SONG Kang-ho is seen as the actor with the greatest potential to attract an audience.

The Host has been picked up for a release in the U.S. from February 2007 and the remake rights for an English version of The Host are sold to the Hollywood studio Universal. The film has enjoyed continues international acclaim and sold out screenings at international film festivals since its world premiere at the 59th Cannes International Film Festival last May.
