Between, a documentary about Korean shamanism by LEE Chang-jae, has been selected to receive a theatrical release in the second half of 2006 through the CJ-CGV Korean Film Distribution Support Fund. The 98-minute, digitally-shot work was selected during the recent Jeonju International Film Festival (April 27 May 5), where it emerged as one of the most critically praised Korean films screening at the event. Under the conditions of the award, the film will screen in selected CGV theaters for at least two weeks, and will receive a marketing budget of 20 million won (~$22,000) as well as funds to assist with digital post-production. Between focuses on a 28-year old woman who is unexpectedly possessed by a spirit, through the eyes of an older shaman who can sense the woman's destiny. Director LEE is a film professor at Chung-Ang University who studied at the Art Institute of Chicago. He has worked as a documentary director at cable station Q Channel, while also producing independent shorts such as Edit and A Brief History of American War. In 2003, another film about Korean shamanism by PARK Ki-bok titled Mudang: Reconciliation Between the Living and the Dead sold an unexpectedly high number of tickets (7,000+) during its limited theatrical release, indicating the interest in this topic among ordinary viewers.
