Director KWAK to Adapt Japanese Novel

Director K.T. KWAK is working with Japanese author MURAKAMI Ryu to adapt his bestselling novel "Depart the Peninsular". The novel, which attracted wide interest when it was released in March 2005, is set in the year 2010 and premises a North Korean invasion of the Japanese island of Kyushu. A Korean translation of the novel was released last month. KWAK, whose 2001 film Friend was a major local hit, directed the US$15 million actioner, Typhoon, which earned US$28 million upon its domestic release last December, somewhat below expectations. South Korea's Zininsa Film, which produced Typhoon, will co-produce Peninsular with Japan's Amuse Soft Entertainment. Amuse had previously bought the distribution rights to KWAK'sTyphoon which it released April 8th in Japan on 250 screens. The new project is scheduled to go into production next year on a production budget similar to Typhoon's. Author MURUKAMI has had many of his works adapted to film, including Japanese features 69 and Audition, directed by MIIKE Takashi. Casting for Peninsular is not yet confirmed but director KWAK has mentioned CHOI Min-sik and Beat TAKESHI for the lead roles. Nigel D'Sa (KOFIC)
