  • AFCNet adds Singapore and Cambodia
  • Jun 30, 2005
  • The Asian Film Commissions Network (AFCNet), a group of organizations throughout Asia that provide support services for location shooting, has added Singapore and Cambodia to its list of regular members. Together with the Hiroshima Film Commission and the Sendai Miyagi Film Commission, which were also added to AFCNet's roster this spring, the network now totals 22 organizations from eight Asian countries. AFCNet was launched in 2004 as a means of promoting information exchange, co-operation and professionalism among Asia's film commissions and other organizations that provide shooting support. Regular members come from China, Korea, Japan, Indonesia, Malaysia, Russia, Cambodia, and Singapore, while associate members from Thailand, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Vietnam act as observers. The group is headed by President PARK Kwang-su of the Busan Film Commission, together with Vice-Presidents Mako TANAKA of the Kobe Film Commission and Kamil OTHMAN of Malaysia's Multimedia Development Corporation. This Octber AFCNet plans to hold a seminar on attracting US productions at BIFCOM (the Busan International Film Commissions Showcase), which takes place alongside the Pusan International Film Festival. The seminar will feature the participation of a Hollywood-based producer and location manager. The organization also plans to offer free or affordable accomodation to directors and screenwriters around the world who are in pre-production on an upcoming feature, to allow them the chanceto concentrate on their work. This is being seen as a marketing tool that will help introduce different parts of Asia to film professionals. More details are scheduled to be listedon the AFCNet website (www.afcnet.org) in the near future. AFCNet looksset to expand further, with the Shanghai Film Studio planning a visit to BIFCOM to discuss the possibility of future membership. During a recent board meeting held in Bali, PARK also met with Indonesia's Assistant Deputy for Film Development to discuss the establishment of a nationwide film commission.
