- Korean films at the 2005 Cannes market

- Korean films notched some high-profile sales at the 2005 Cannes market, although the general level of activity was not up to that of last year. The comparatively quiet market for Korean films was due to the fact that most of the highest-profile productions had already been introduced at previous events, including Berlin in February, Hong Kong in March, or AFM in November of last year. Films such as April Snow, Duelist, A Bittersweet Life, Sympathy for Lady Vengeance, and others have already sold widely even before the films finished shooting. One new film introduced this year was action noir Running Wild by KIM Sung-soo (a debut director who shares the same name as the director ofMusa), which sold for a high price to Japan thanks to the presence of stars like KWON Sang-woo and YU Ji-tae. A.P.T., the new film from noted horror director AHN Byung-ki (Bunshinsaba), was also pre-sold to Japan even before the start of shooting. KIM Ki-duk's The Bow, meanwhile, was sold to Singapore and Malaysia. Purchases by European companies included upcoming horror film The Red Shoes, which was bought by the UK, Italy, and others; Antarctic Journal to the UK, Italy and Germany; Blood Rain to the UK and Italy; horror film Red Eye to the UK, Spain, and Germany; April Snow, Crying Fist and The President's Last Bang to France; and Marathon and Welcome to Dongmakgol to the UK. In general, an emerging trend is that many Korean films are now pre-sold during production. This change has been brought about by the fact that regular buyers have emerged for Korean films, who are confident enough to predict how a film will do in their home territory based on the genre, director, stars, etc.
