  • JIFF unveils 12th lineup
  • by Nigel D’Sa (KOFIC) /  Apr 11, 2011
  •
The Jeonju International Film Festival (JIFF) announced the lineup of it’s 12th edition, with Berlin’s Golden Bear winner <Nader and Simin, a Separation> by Iran’s Asghar Farhadi to launch the fest.  Running April 28 – May 6, JIFF will screen a total of 190 films from 38 countries, including 11 world premieres and 35 Asian premieres.

In its International Competition section, Jeonju has invited 12 films by debut directors, including Korea’s An Escalator in World Order by director KIM Kyung-man.  The festival’s acclaimed annual omnibus effort, Jeonju Digital Project, this year brings together the digital films of three outstanding auteurs from Europe:  Jean-Marie Straub, Claire Denis and José Luis Guerín.

The Korean Feature Film Competition will showcase a total of 10 Korean films consisting of 4 documentaries and 6 fictions this year.  Among them is the documentary-fiction blend <Anyang, Paradise City> by PARK Chan-kyon, whose iphone short <Night Fishing> – a collaboration with his brother PARK Chan-wook – won Berlin’s Golden Bear for short film.

This year’s retrospective specials will focus on Filipino independent filmmaker Kidlat Tahimik; Korea’s visual master LEE Myung-se, Spanish cineaste Jose Luis Guerin, Mexico's Nicolas Pereda, and a showcase of Portuguese cinema.  JIFF staples include commercial and genre-oriented Cinemafest; Stranger than Cinema, a selection of cutting-edge art-house titles; and Local Jeonju Cinema.
