  • HUR Jin-ho Project Invited to Hong Kong-Asia Film Financing Forum
  • by Pierce Conran /  Feb 05, 2021
  • Murder Drama THE DINNER Selected for HAF

Celebrated director HUR Jin-ho is set to take part in the 19th Hong Kong-Asia Film Financing Forum (HAF) after his new project The Dinner was selected as one of this year’s 29 participants. HUR’s is the only project from South Korea.

The Dinner tells the story of two brothers with differing world views, one a materialistic lawyer, the other an idealistic surgeon, who must set their differences aside when a serious crime is committed by their children.

The brothers and their wives meet once a month for dinner and during one of these get-togethers, they come across CCTV footage of a teenage boy and girl attacking a vagrant and are horrified to realize that the assailants are their children. Now the couples must debate what steps they will take. The project is budgeted at approximately USD 7 million.

In a statement accompanying the project, Director HUR explains that he hopes “the audience will find the irony and dilemma facing parents who have to make ethical choices over their children’s transgressions.”

HUR is best known for the classic melodramas Christmas in August (1998) and One Fine Spring Day (2001) and recorded his biggest ever hit with the Colonial Era drama The Last Princess in 2016. His last film was the period drama Forbidden Dream, released in 2019.

The Dinner is being produced by KIM Won-kuk through the production company Hive Media Corp, who was behind the recent hits The Man Standing Next (2020) and DELIVER US FROM EVIL (2020). KIM previously worked with HUR on The Last Princess.

HAF will take place during the Hong Kong International Film and Festival TV Market (FILMART), which will be held from March 15 to 17.
