  • PARK Hoon-jung and NEW to Partner on THE WITCH
  • by Pierce Conran /  Dec 03, 2020
  • Development Underway for Sequel to THE WITCH: PART 1. THE SUBVERSION

Next Entertainment World (NEW) has confirmed that they have come on board as investor and distributor for The Witch 2, a sequel to the 2018 hit The Witch : Part 1. The Subversion, starring KIM Da-mi, CHO Min-soo and CHOI Woo-shik.

The first film was financed and released by Warner Bros Korea, but since Warner Bros are in the process of winding down their film operations in Korea, the development of the sequel had to continue with a new studio. The original was seen by almost 3.2 million viewers during its domestic theatrical release.

The Witch : Part 1. The Subversion (2018) tells the story of a young orphan girl who is raised in the countryside after escaping from a laboratory many years earlier following an accident. She begins to develop special powers and after appearing on a television show, shadowy figures from her past try to track her down.

PARK Hoon-jung, who will return to the director’s chair, has indicated that the sequel will have a larger scale than the original. The initial plan was to include foreign locations but since overseas location production costs were too high, he changed the story to have operatives from international organizations visit Korea instead. The sequel will have a higher budget, in order to focus more on the project’s action elements.

While casting has yet to be finalized, industry sources suggest that actor LEE Jong-suk will appear in a special role, which would be his first project after completing his obligatory military service next January. He previously starred in Director PARK’s V.I.P. (2017).

STUDIO&NEW, the production arm of NEW, and Director PARK’s production company Goldmoon, recently entered into a partnership to develop content for both the big and small screen. Development is also underway for a prequel series to PARK’s 2013 gangland hit New World.
