- JIFF Reveals Jeonju Cinema Projects for 21st Edition

The Jeonju International Film Festival (JIFF) has revealed the three Jeonju Cinema Projects that will populate its 21st edition, which will begin May 28. This year’s titles will be the homegrown films Three Sisters by LEE Seung-won and A Distant Place by PARK Kun-young, as well as Afterwater by Balkan filmmaker Dane KOMLJEN.Three Sisters is the third film by LEE Seung-won, who debuted with the Busan International Film Festival New Currents titles Communication and Lies in 2015 and also made the dysfunctional family comedy Happy Bus Day, which debuted at the Hong Kong International Film Festival and later screened in Jeonju in 2017. The film stars KIM Sun-young, who has appeared in both of Director LEE’s previous films, MOON So-ri (Oasis, 2002) and JANG Yoon-joo (Veteran, 2015).A Distant Place, the story of a man living with his daughter in Gangwon Province who receives a visit from his male lover and later his twin sister, is the sophomore work of director PARK Kun-young, who debuted with the well-received To My River, which screened in Busan in 2018. The film features KANG Gil-woo (Swing Kids, 2018), LEE Sang-hee (I Can Speak, 2017) and KI Joo-bong (Hotel by the River, 2018).’Afterwater is a co-production between Germany, Korea, Spain and Serbia. This experimental work marks the second feature length film for Dane KOMLJEN, who debuted with All the Cities of the North in 2016.The Jeonju Cinema Project is a signature program of the Jeonju International Film Festival, which seeks to support daring feature-length independent cinema from around the world. Previously known as the Jeonju Digital Project, a yearly omnibus project that would encompass three mid-length works, the program turned into its current version in 2014. Notable titles since then have included PARK Jung-bum’s Alive (2015), SHIN Yeon-shick’s The Avian Kind (2015), KIM Hee-jung’s Snow Paths (2016), KIM Dae-hwan’s The First Lap (2017) and KIM Jong-kwan’s Shades of the Heart (2019).This year’s JIFF will take place without a public audience, with screenings limited to jury members and invited filmmakers owing to this year’s Covid-19 pandemic. However, various online showcases will be held from late May until September, with further details to be announced.
