  • KIM Hwi to Adapt Chinese Action Drama Hit

The Chinese crime action drama Project Gutenberg is set to receive a Korean remake. As reported by Screen Daily during this year’s Hong Kong International Film & TV Market (FILMART), which takes place alongside the Hong Kong International Film Festival, Korean genre filmmaker KIM Hwi will direct the update, which will have a budget in the range of USD 12 to 15 million.

The Korean outfit NOORI PICTURES and Just Creative Studio (JCS), an affiliate of the Chinese company Bona Film Group, will jointly produce the project. The producer of the film will be KIM Jung-ah kathy, formerly the CEO of CJ Entertainment during the time it released KIM Jee-woon’s The Good, The Bad, And The Weird (2008). NOORI’s LEE Yong-ho and JCS’ Jeffrey CHAN will also join the film as executive producers.

Director KIM Hwi debuted with the serial killer The Neighbors in 2012 and later made the shamanism thriller The Chosen: Forbidden Cave, which served as the closing film of the Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival (BIFAN) in 2015. KIM also came on board the period thriller The Tooth and the Nail (2017) at a late stage, joining director JUNG Sik on the film.

The original Protect Gutenberg, a Chinese-Hong Kong co-production featuring HK superstars CHOW Yun-fat and Aaron KWOK from director Felix CHONG, was a major hit in China last year, where it grossed almost USD 190 million. The film chronicles the hunt for a counterfeiting mastermind known as Painter.
