  • Jecheon International Music & Film Festival Winds to a Close

The Jecheon International Music & Film Festival (JIMFF) wrapped up it 2018 edition earlier this month, awarding its top prize, the Lotte Award, to the Indian film Up Down & Sideways from directors Anushka Meenakshi and Iswar Srikumar in the international competition. Also awarded was the US-Germany co-production When God Sleeps by Till Schauder, which earned a Jury Special Mention.

All told, this year’s JIMFF screened 116 films from 38 countries, featured performances by 40 different musical acts and welcomed in excess of 30,000 spectators.

Meanwhile, JIMFF also staged its first project pitching market this year, the Music Film Project Promotion. LEE Sang-Mock’s Korean Gypsy Sound, Soriquete earned three awards, a development grant worth KRW 10 million (USD 9,000), support for sound mastering and support for English subtitles, while JANG Dong-ju’s Shinin’ Ground received a development grant worth KRW 5 million (USD 4,500).

Aside from the jury and project awards, the major prize handed out every year in the lakeside Korean town in the Jecheon Asia Film Music Honorary Award. This year, the accolade went to the successful Chinese composer TAN Dun, who is known around the world for his score from Ang LEE’s period martial arts drama Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. The score earned him the Academy Award for Best Original Score in 2000. TAN is also a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador and has also received a Grammy Award and BAFTA award.

This year’s 14th edition of the Jecheon International Music & Film Festival took place from August 9 to 14.
