  • LEE Chang-dong to Take Part in Toronto Jury this September
  • by Pierce Conran /  Jun 04, 2018
  • Korean Master Joins Bela Tarr and Margarethe von Trotta for TIFF’s Platform

Director LEE Chang-dong, who returned after eight years this month with his film BURNING, which premiered in the main competition of the Cannes Film Festival, has been invited to participate in the ‘Platform’ jury of this September’s 43rd Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF).

The Toronto Platform Prize awards CAD 25,000 to a film in the ‘Platform’ section at TIFF. Now in its fourth year, the program showcases 12 works from new voices in global cinema. Joining Director LEE on the jury will be Hungarian master filmmaker Bela Tarr, known for Sátántangó and Werckmeister Harmonies, and the New German Cinema filmmaker Margarethe von Trotta, whose works include Marianne & Juliane.

Following his 1997 debut Green Fish, LEE has become one of the most respected Korean filmmakers of all time, thanks to the acclaim received by each of his works, including A Peppermint Candy (2000), Oasis (2002), Secret Sunshine (2007) and Poetry (2010), which received the Best Screenplay Prize at the Cannes Film Festival.

LEE recently traveled to the 71st edition of Cannes, where his latest work was rapturously received by local critics. Based on a short story by MURAKAMI Haruki and starring YOO Ah-in, Steven YEUN and newcomer JUN Jong-seo, BURNING received the highest ever score recorded on ScreenDaily’s annual Cannes Jury Grid.

This year’s TIFF will run from September 6 to 16. The ‘Platform’ lineup is expected to be announced on August 7.
