- Busan International Short Film Festival Welcomes Record 5,921 Submissions

The Busan International Short Film Festival received 5,921 submissions from 129 countries for the competition sections of this year’s upcoming 35th edition, which will take place over April 24-29. The finalists in both the International and Korean competition sections will be announced on February 22.This year’s submission total constituted a new record for BISFF, surpassing the 4,733 entries from 126 countries that were considered last year. The increase is in part due to a greater interest in the festival after it was designated as an Oscar-qualifying festival by the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences.The Grand Prix winners in the ‘International Competition’ and ‘Korean Competition’ will now be eligible for consideration in the Animated Short Film/Live Action Short Film categories of the Academy Awards without the need for a theatrical run in the United States.There are four competitive sections at BISFF, including the International Competition, the Korean Competition, the NETPAC Award (given to the best Asian short in the two competitions by Network for the Promotion of Asian Cinema) and Operation Kino, a short documentary-making contest for students from Busan’s cinema universities.67% of the entries in this year’s International Competition were for narrative films, while 13% were experimental films, and both documentaries and animations each accounted for 10%. In the Korean competition, 74% were narrative entries, followed by animations at 15%, experimental films 7% and documentaries at 4%.
