- BONG Joon-ho Among Metacritic’s Best Directors of the 21st Century

Review aggregator website Metacritic recently published a list of the 25-best reviewed filmmakers of the 21st century to date. Okja director BONG Joon-ho made it onto the ranking, where he was tied at number 13 with an average rating of 81.2.Metacritic collates reviews of general releases in the United States from major newspapers and websites and gives each film a weighted score out of 100. Director BONG was on the list with five films counted (all of his works after Barking Dogs Never Bite), which ranged from a low of 76 for Okja to a high of 85 for The Host (2006). BONG tied with Kelly Reichardt, who made last year’s Certain Women. Topping the list was Gravity director Alfonso Cuaron with an 87.5 score.Director BONG was the only Korean filmmaker to make the list though several cineastes from Asia were also featured, including MIYAZAKI Hayao (#4) and KOREEDA Hirokazu (#23) from Japan, HOU Hsiao-hsien (#16 tie) from Taiwan, Nuri Bilge Ceylan (#16 tie) from Turkey, and Jafar Panahi (#5), Asghar Farhadi (#8), Abbas Kiarostami (#20) and Bahman Ghobadi (#25 tie) from Iran.BONG recently made waves internationally with the release of his latest film Okja. Fully financed by online streaming giant Netflix, the big-budget, environmental, fantasy action-drama, which stars Tilda Swinton, Jake Gyllenhaal, Paul Dano and AHN Seo-hyun, debuted in competition at the Cannes Film Festival in May. It was released around the world on Netflix on June 28th, with select markets, including the US, UK and South Korea giving the film limited theatrical runs.
