Festival to Launch VR CINEMA in BIFF Program
The 22nd edition of the
Busan International Film Festival (BIFF) will host Asia’s largest Virtual Reality (VR) cinema event. Titled ‘VR CINEMA in BIFF’, the program will launch this fall and is expected to be “a long-term project to lead the technology for the domestic film industry, and not as a temporary pop-up event.” BIFF’s organizing committee recently signed an agreement with
Barunson E&A Corp., a leading VR content company in Korea to co-operate the VR CINEMA in BIFF program.
“The combination of VR technology and cinema is only natural and mutually beneficial.” said
KANG Soo-youn, the Festival Director, adding “It is very important to think and find a method for how VR technology can help films reach a new level.” Daniel KANG, C.E.O. of Barunson E&A Corp., also commented “VR is one of the technologies related to the Fourth Industrial Revolution and is very suitable for combining cultural content. I will promote projects in various industries that can be used in conjunction with the VR format from now on.”
According to the agreement, BIFF will open the VR CINEMA venue at the
Busan Cinema Center where more than 30 VR films will be screened to the public during the festival. Amidst the festival’s first weekend, a VR CINEMA conference for filmmakers will be held in the Busan Exhibition & Convention Center (BEXCO), concurrently with the
Asian Film Market. This year’s BIFF will take place for ten days from October 12th to 21st.
