  • Bond/360 Picks Up Buddhist Monk Doc in Berlin

Korean documentary Becoming Who I Was, from director MOON Chang-yong and JEON Jin, has been picked up for North American distribution by Bond/360. The distributor will screen the film in New York before rolling it through on a multi-platform release.

The film, which was invited to the Generation Kplus in Berlin International Film Festival, follows the life of Padma Angdu, who is born as a rinpoche and must take on the responsibility to unlock his former self, a high Tibetan monk who lived 1,500 years ago, when he is just six years old.

Bond/360 COO Elizabeth Sheldon described the work as “a charming film that synthesizes both a coming-of-age story, a road trip and a love story between a young master and his guardian.” Sheldon and co-director JEON brokered the deal during the European Film Market, taking place alongside this year’s 67th Berlinale.

The documentary debuted at the DMZ International Documentary Film Festival last year and went on to screen at the Busan International Film Festival in October. Becoming Who I Was was shot over a period of eight years and marks the feature film debut of both MOON and JEON, following their careers as TV documentarians.

Becoming Who I Was went on to pick up the Generation Kplus Grand Prize at the close of this year’s Berlin International Film Festival on Saturday, February 18th.
