It was a big year for Korean films at the Berlin International Film Festival with a pair of major prizes going to Korean film talent at the conclusion of the 67th Berlinale on Saturday, February 18th. KIM Min-hee became the first Korean performer to earn a prize at the festival, as she came away with the Silver Bear for Best Actress for her leading role in Hong Sangsoo’s Competition film On the Beach at Night Alone. The documentary Becoming Who I Was, from directors MOON Chang-yong and JEON Jin, was awarded the Generation Kplus Grand Prize.On the Beach at Night Alone, which takes place both in Hamburg, Germany and the Korean seaside town Gangneung, features KIM as an actress coming to terms with the end of an affair with a married director. The film is director Hong’s 19th and his third in Competition in Berlin, after Night And Day (2008) and Nobody’s Daughter Haewon (2013).KIM, who has received several awards over the last two years for her roles in Right Now, Wrong Then (2015), her first collaboration with director Hong, and PARK Chan-wook’s The Handmaiden (2016), became only the third performer from Korea to earn a prize at one of the top three global film festivals, following KANG Soo-yeon’s Venice win for IM Kwon-taek’s The Surrogate Womb in 1987 and JEON Do-yeon prize in Cannes for LEE Chang-dong’s Secret Sunshine in 2007.Becoming Who I Was, which follows the travails of Angdu, a young rinpoche born as the reincarnation of a Tibetan high monk, debuted at the DMZ International Documentary Film Festival before screening at the Busan International Film Festival. The Generation jury included The World of Us director YOON Ga-eun, who picked up the Generation Kplus Crystal Bear for Best Short film in 2014 for her film Sprout.
