Korean Update Marks 1st Hollywood Outing for French Outfit
After months of speculation, the English-language remake rights of the runaway hit
TRAIN TO BUSAN have landed with French studio Gaumont which beat out several competitors, including reported bidders such as Fox, Sony, Studiocanal and EuropaCorp. The project will mark the company’s first English-language project to be made in Los Angeles.
The deal was brokered between Gaumont’s head of international production and distribution Cecile Gaget and Danny LEE and Vincent KIM from
Contents Panda, the international arm of the film’s studio
Next Entertainment World (NEW).
From director
YEON Sang-ho,
TRAIN TO BUSAN has blazed a trail both in Korea and abroad ever since it bowed at the Cannes Film Festival in a midnight slot this spring. Featuring
GONG Yoo,
Don LEE (aka MA Dong-seok),
JUNG Yu-Mi and
KIM Su-an, the film is the most successful Korean film of the year, having attracted 11.57 million viewers (USD 79.89 million) in Korea. It also became the most bankable Korean film ever in several markets, including Hong Kong, Singapore and the Philippines and has grossed well in excess of USD 100 million globally.
Though cast and crew have yet to be finalized for the remake, Gaumont is currently fielding inquiry from several top name talents in Hollywood as it moves forward with the project. The deal between Gaumont and NEW also includes French-language remake rights, but the company indicates that there are no current plans for a French version.
