  • Strong Business for FINECUT in Los Angeles

Korean film distributor FINECUT scored more sales at the American Film Market in Santa Monica, California for its hottest films during what has already been a strong year for the company. Titles included KIM Jee-woon’s The Age of Shadows, NA Hong-jin’s THE WAILING and HONG Sang-soo’s Yourself and Yours.

This year’s Korean hopeful for the Academy Awards’ Best Foreign Language Film category, period action espionage The Age of Shadows was picked up by Soda Pictures for the United Kingdom, California Filmes for Latin America, M Pictures for Thailand and CJ E&M for Singapore. The film was the biggest Chuseok (Korean Thanksgiving Day) holiday release of this year, attracting 7.5 million viewers (USD 52.41 million).

The Cannes-premiered horror-thriller THE WAILING was also snatched up by California Filmes, as well as by Mayfly which will bring the film to Poland. NA’s film was a spring hit in Korea, amassing 6.88 million admissions (USD 47.79 million).

HONG Sang-soo’s latest title Yourself and Yours, which bowed at the Toronto International Film Festival in September, was purchased for distribution in France by Les Acacia, with Spanish rights going to La Aventura and AV-Jet scooping up Taiwan. The arthouse title recently snagged the Best Director Award at the San Sebastian International Film Festival.

Set Me Free (2014) director KIM Tae-yong’s new title MISBEHAVIOR was bought by Clover Films (Singapore), Creative Century (Taiwan) and Viva Communications (Philippines). Youth indie dram The World of Us was also picked up by Spring Has Come (Japan) and SinemaTV (Turkey).
