  • Busan Readies Plans for Korea’s Largest Film Studio
  • by Pierce Conran /  Jul 25, 2016
  • Facilities to Go into Operation in 2020

The government of Busan City is moving ahead with plans to construct new film studios, which are expected to open in 2020. Though the new plans indicate that the structure will be smaller than pervasively expected, the new sound stages will still be the largest in South Korea.

The facilities will be constructed at the Ceramic Village site in Gijang, just north of Busan, an area encompassing 250,000m². Tow indoor stages will be built, one of which will be 5,610m² and the other 1,650m². Digital production support and post-production facilities will also be included in the site. The studio will be three times larger than the current biggest set, which is the DIMA film studio (1,824m²) in Ansung, Gyeonggi-do Province.

KIM Kyu-ok, the vice mayor for economic affairs of Busan City, stated that ”Having a world-class film studio will help bolster the Korean film industry's international competitiveness.”

The project is being backed by the Busan Metropolitan City, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the Korean Film Council (KOFIC, Chairman - KIM Sae-hoon), and the Gijanggun ward office.

Busan has been home to the Busan International Film Festival, the leading film event in Asia, for the past 20 years, and the seaside town also became the new home of the Korean Film Council in 2013. Construction of the new studios is expected to begin next year.
