Daum Quintet to Screen Theatrically in China
Kakao, the Korean mobile platform which includes the Kakao chat message app, is joining forces with Chinese film and TV media outfit Huace Group to adapt five webtoons from Korea’s online portal Daum into films for the Chinese market. Kakao’s Daum Webtoon introduced the webcomic format to Korea in 2003 and has remained a market leader ever since, producing a range of popular titles, including Moss and Secretly Greatly, both of which were turned into popular Korean films.
Kakao and Huace have already signed deals on four titles, with one more to follow. The properties in question, which will be adapted as movies, TV dramas or web dramas and subsequently made available throughout China, are proven hits such as Girl in the Mirror, Help! Breakup Ghost, Just One Shot, Cashero and My Boss Dies Once a Day.
The Huace Group produces over 1,000 TV dramas per year and last year launched a film division which has already partnered with Korean studio
Next Entertainment World, of which it also acquired a 15% stake.
Iggy PARK, head of Kakao’s Daum Webtoon team stated that “It is a great pleasure to help our authors reach out to their current and potential fans in China through the screens. This marks a meaningful beginning of our effort to bring powerful webtoon content to the global screens.”
Speaking on behalf of Huace Films, Head of Global Business Jon CHIEW, said that “Leveraging the best of our capabilities and infrastructure, we are confident that we can bring out the utmost value from each of the five titles.”
