  • Diverse Korean Films Getting Some Sun

This fall, the 34th Hawaii International Film Festival (HIFF) will be held in the sunny American state from October 30th to November 9th in Oahu and November 13th to 16th in Big Island and Kauai with about 150 films from across 45 countries with a variety of themes and genres. The programming team selected 11 Korean titles which are peppered throughout the programs.

Quite a few number of titles were TIFF films including BOO Ji-young’s Cart, SHIM Sung-bo’s Haemoo, KIM Seong-hun’s A Hard Day, Hong Sang-soo’s Hill of Freedom, and IM Kwon-taek’s Revivre. The listed titles are all part of the ‘Spotlight on Korea’, with US premiere of Cart as a gala along with the Hawaii premiere of My Brilliant Life by E J-yong. Narrative Feature Nominees include A Hard Day and Haemoo from South Korea along with A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night, The Furthest End Awaits, and Paradise in Service.

Night Flight, the most recent film from LEESONG Hee-il which went to Jeonju, Berlin, Edinburgh and Hong Kong, makes its US premiere in Spotlight on Korea. In the same program, the soon to be released We Are Brothers, starring CHO Jin-woong and KIM Sung-kyun will have its international premiere.

A few Korean shorts were invited as well. My Dream, Greco-Roman in the Turning Point section is a coming of age story about an amateur wrestler who must win his match. A short by NA Seung-ha and YOO Heri is Penguin Suicides, an animation in the Animation Ground Control section. Taste in Guys stars KIM Kkotbbi in a romance story about a woman who tries to find her true love in a market.

As the sister festival of Shanghai International Film Festival (SIFF) and Shanghai Media and Entertainment Group (SMEG) HIFF attracts 70,000 film enthusiasts every year.
