Table Tennis Film to Bow April 20th
Last year’s ping pong film
As One, about a unified Korean table tennis team that came together to compete in the 1991 World Championships, has finally secured a Japanese release date. Japanese exhibitors had initially refused to screen the film, citing tensions with North Korea.
HA Ji-won and
BAE Doo-na headline the inspirational sports film as HYUN Jung-hwa and LI Bun-hui, respectively. HYUN and LI were the female captains of the South and North Korean table tennis teams that worked to overcome political differences during the 46 days they trained and played together leading up the women’s doubles final of the 1991 World Championships.
Though released in Korea last May, the film is still being making the rounds. Just last month it screened at the Fribourg International Film Festival.
