  • KOFIC Announces the May 2017 Film Industry Report

  • To Mark the Highest Number of Viewers Year-on-Year
     

    The number of audiences and the total sales in May, 2017 were 18.68 million and USD 132 million, respectively. According to the report on May 2017 Korean film industry by Korean Film Council (KOFIC), these are the largest among the May records ever. The total number of viewers increased by 550,000 and 3.0% while the total sales grew USD 1.5 million and 1.1% from the same period of previous year. 

    Market share of Korean films was 34.6% while that of foreign films was 65.4%. The number of local film viewers was 6.47 million, a 22.7% decrease from last year. Ticket sales, totaling USD 44.9 million, were down USD 14.5 million or 24.3% compared to from sales from a year ago. Meanwhile, the number of foreign film viewers was 12.21 million, up 2.45 million or 25.0% from the same time of 2016. The ticket sales of foreign films was USD 87 million, a 22.3% (15.87 million dollar) increase over a year ago.  

    Number one at the Korean box office in May was Hollywood blockbuster Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2 drawing 2.73 million moviegoers. In second was comedy thriller The Sheriff In Town with 2.57 million viewers while third place went to DreamWorks’ animation The Boss Baby with 2.35 million audiences, followed by Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales bringing 18.7 million audiences and Mystery thriller Get Out with 1.84 million spectators. 

    The best performing distributor was Walt Disney Company Korea which released four films including Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2, recording 24.9% market share. CJ E&M came in second with 22.7% market share distributing The King’s Case Note, The Merciless and three more while Lotte Shopping Lotte Entertainment reached third place with 13.8% market share releasing The sheriff In Town and two more.
