Two Korean Films towards Double-10 million viewer-mark
RYOO Seung-wan’s
Veteran, released on August 5th, has attracted 9.04 million viewers as of August 23rd, which is the 19th day since release, being just a few steps away from 10 million viewers. With as many as 1.3 million viewers already on the first weekend,
Veteran has been staying in the no. 1 place in the box office for 19 days, and for 3 successive weeks, no. 1 in the weekend box office as well. So far RYOO’s best sold film was
The Berlin File, which attracted 7.1 million viewers nationwide, and
Veteran has broken this record.
The performance of
Veteran is all the more noteworthy because
CHOI Dong-hoon’s
Assassination reached 10 million viewers as of August 15th. It has been seen by 11.5 million viewers as of 23rd. If
Veteran hits 10 million viewers, it will mark the first time ever in Korean film history to have two films reaching 10 million viewers at the same time in theaters. It is even more meaningful because the Korean market share in the first half of 2015 was a record low of 42.5% which is the lowest since 38.6% of the first half of 2008.
The speed of performances of two films is very impressive as well.
Assassination does not break the record of reaching 10 million viewers that
Roaring Currents holds, which is 12 days, or
The Thieves’ 22 days, but the film was seen by 5 million viewers in 9 days since release, which is still very much impressive.
Veteran took one more day to reach 5 million viewers, but one day less in reaching 9 million viewers.
With great characters, awesome action and outstanding cast, these two films have defeated Hollywood blockbusters this summer. It is still hard to see which one of these two will make the final victory and be the true winner of 2015.
