  • Master of Manly Action PARK Hoon-jung Directs Female-led Action Drama
  • by HWANG Hee-yun /  Jul 10, 2018
  • Director PARK Hoon-jung’s Box Office Power

There was much expectation for PARK Hoon-jung even before his directing debut; indeed, the two scenarios he wrote for I Saw The Devil (2010) (by KIM Jee-woon, 1,817,069 viewers) and The Unjust (2010) (by RYOO Seung-wan, 2,723,028 viewers) were praised by film aficionados for their qualities and structures. To follow up his stream of hits, PARK directed manly action films like New World (2013) and V.I.P. (2017). His action films have captivated the male audience, and New World is his most successful movie to date. After his gangster film attracted 4,682,492 moviegoers, PARK scored 1,762,742 admissions with The Tiger (2015), starring CHOI Min-shik, and 1,373,316 viewers with V.I.P., starring JANG Dong-gun, KIM Myung-min, and PARK Hee-soon. This year, he has returned with his new mystery-action film The Witch : Part 1. The Subversion, which title sounds much more feminine. “The film was planned as the first of two parts”, PARK said before its release. “The first one would be about subversion and the second one about the collision.” Like his previous works, this revenge thriller has been receiving praises from his fans and has already convinced 1,796,745 moviegoers. PARK is now stepping outside of his comfort zone, manly action films, to create the future of feminine action films.
