- Born in 1970, LEE Jung-eun has been profoundly affected by the events that followed the death of student activist LEE Han-yeol in 1987 as she witnessed a classmate being expelled from her school for encouraging other students to wear a black ribbon. LEE thought she would better live doing what she wants and decided to study theatre at the Hanyang University. She debuted in 1991 in a performance of <A Midsummer Night’s Dream>, before graduating in 1992. She would be very active on stage throughout the rest of the 1990s and the following decade. In 2008, she joined the cast of Korean musical <Laundry>, with which she would perform until 2009 and again in 2012. The director of <Laundry> production company, CHOI Se-yeon, happened to be also serving at the time as costumer designer on BONG Joon-ho’s <Mother> (2009), and so the director came to one of the performances, was impressed by LEE’s talent and decided to give her a small role in his film. Although she had previously appeared in <A Masterpiece in My Life> (2000) and <Wanee And Junah> (2001), <Mother> was the film that really launched her film career. She would later be seen in popular films <The Attorney> (2013) and <A Violent Prosecutor> (2015) as well as in festival favorites <A Girl at My Door> (2014) and <THE WAILING> (2016), with more substantial roles in <A Taxi Driver> (2017), <Miss Baek> (2017) and <Another Child> (2018). In 2016, she won Best Acting at the Seoul Theatre Festival. BONG kept working with her and cast her again for his Netflix film in <Okja> and, more importantly, <PARASITE> (2019). Not only did her character in the latter turn out to be much more important to the plot than initially thought, but she also managed to pull off a performance unanimously praised by the audiences and critics alike as a literal scene stealer. close
