- Born in 1962 to legendary film director LEE Man-hee and a stage actress, LEE Hye-young naturally decided at a very young age that she would be an actor. After passing an audition at the Hyundae Theater, she made there her acting debut, at the age of 18, in a stage production of <Sound of Music> in 1981, soon followed by other musicals lie <Jesus Christ Superstar> and <Evita>. Having been widely recognized as a versatile newcomer, she made a short appearance in KIM Won-du’s family drama <Mom’s Wedding> (1981) before getting her first role in JEONG In-yeob’s <Mrs. Kim Ma-Ri> (1983). As she was commonly viewed as an attractive woman, she was often cast in one of the erotic dramas that dominated the decade, yet these roles were often supporting roles portraying strong-willed women with their own agency, such as in <Blazing Sun> (1984). She was also known as one of the rare actors of the time to dub herself in the post-recording sessions. In <Winter Wanderer> (1986), she played a prostitute who only accepts US Army soldiers, and in IM Kwon-taek’s <Ticket> (1986), she was one of the girls of a coffee house that doubles as a call-girl service. In 1990, she landed the role of a communist insurgent in CHUNG Ji-young’s <North Korean Partisan In South Korea> (1990). She was next seen playing against AHN Sung-ki in <The Hair Dresser> in 1995, and co-starring PARK Joong-hoon in <Hallelujah> (1997). In RYOO Seung-wan’s <No Blood No Tears> (2001), she was a taxi driver who plans a robbery along with the mistress of a gang boss played by JEON Do-yeon. Since the 2000s, LEE has been better known for her television roles, notably with popular drama series like <I’m Sorry, I Love You> (2004) and <Boys Over Flowers> (2009). After she was almost completely absent from the public eye in the next decade, she made a successful comeback in 2018 with the television series <Mother> and <Lawless Lawyer>. close
