HOBBS & SHAW Shove Aside Local Holdovers

MY TYRANO and WARNING: DO NOT PLAY Debut in Top 5

Following a few weeks of local dominance, a Hollywood tentpole once again topped the box office, but strong holdovers allowed the domestic industry to retain a 57% market share advantage. All told, 3.07 million tickets were sold, slowing 20% from last week as the school holidays ended.

The Fast & the Furious franchise posted its best ever debut in the Korean market with the spinoff title Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw. The Dwayne JOHNSON and Jason STATHAM action vehicle posted 1.13 million sales (USD 8.54 million) over its first weekend and a total 2.03 million admissions (USD 15.11 million) over five days. The top-selling entry overall in the series is Fast & Furious 8, with 3.65 million entries recorded in 2016.

Holding on to second place after a 44% slide was the local period action-drama The Battle: Roar to Victory, as it filled 792,000 seats (USD 5.77 million). The Showbox film has amassed 3.94 million viewers (USD 27.89 million) to date.

Off 47% in week three was this season’s top local hit, the disaster action-comedy EXIT. The film added 769,000 spectators (USD 5.59 million), raising its total to 7.56 million admissions (USD 52.72 million) and making it the third best-selling Korean title of the year and sixth overall, though it should pass Spider-Man: Far From Home on its road to claiming fifth place before long.

The local animation My TYRANO: Together, Forever debuted in fourth place with 65,000 sales (USD 434,000) and 147,000 tickets (USD 972,000) sold through its first five days.

New Korean horror Warning: Do Not Play kicked off its run in fifth place with 50,000 entries (USD 373,000) and a total of 86,000 admissions (USD 631,000) recorded since its Thursday launch.

A slew of new local titles will march in to theaters this week, which will include period comedy Jesters: The Game Changers, occult horror Metamorphosis and YOON Ga-eun’s new indie drama The House of Us. Also opening this week will be the Benedict CUMBERBATCH-starring historical drama The Current War.
