No Change from Last Week’s Top 4 Titles

A lack of major new titles led to slow weekend at the box office which unusually saw no change in the rankings in its top four titles compared to the previous weekend. Admissions were down about 20% week-on-week as 1.53 million tickets were snapped up, while the local industry scrapped its way back to a majority after clinching just over 50% of sales.

Investigative comedy-action sequel The Accidental Detective 2: In Action was down just 9% in its sophomore frame, as it welcomed another 627,000 cinemagoers (USD 5.06 million) to boost its total to a respectable 2.03 million viewers (USD 15.88 million) after 12 days.

In week three, Hollywood blockbuster Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom was down 50% with another 335,000 entries (USD 2.65 million) pushing its take to a robust 5.28 million admissions (USD 41.84 million). The film opened in the United States this weekend as well, where it dominated the charts.

After a middling start, Ocean’s 8 lost just 32% of its audience, with another 242,000 sales (USD 1.98 million) pushing its total to 1.05 million viewers (USD 8.35 million).

Still, a presence during its fourth week on the charts was LEE Hae-young’s Drug War remake Believer, which added another 86,000 admissions (USD 711,000) as it slid 32%. The film is inches away from becoming the first Korean film of 2018 to cross the five million viewer milestone, with 4.98 million tickets (USD 38.35 million) sold to date.

The only new title in the top five was the American romantic drama Midnight Sun which mustered a quiet debut with 55,000 viewers (USD 443,000) over its first weekend and 74,000 spectators (USD 574,000) recorded over its first four days.

Just shy of the top five was the local youth drama Student A from Lotte Entertainment, which opened with 42,000 entries (USD 325,000) and 64,000 sales (USD 491,000) since Wednesday.

A trio of titles is aiming for the top spot this coming weekend with Hollywood thriller Sicario: Day of the Soldado going up against local comfort woman drama Herstory and the domestic action-thriller The Witch : Part 1. The Subversion.
