Japanese Anime Keeps Local Films at Bay

Business was brisk during the first weekend of 2017 with the national market share splitting three ways as a Japanese film exceptionally climbed to the top of the chart. Japan led with 34% while Korea and the US followed with 31% and 28%. Total admissions reached 2.66 million over the weekend.

Leading the charge was the smash hit Japanese animation Your Name from SHINKAI Makoto, with 838,000 viewers (USD 5.87 million) in its opening weekend which, along with its previews, gives it an early total of 1.18 million spectators (USD 8.09 million). Word of mouth for the critically acclaimed film is stellar and it should have no trouble remaining on top of the chart at least until the local Lunar New Year pics open in the middle of next week.

Tumbling a hefty 59% in its third week was the star driven action-thriller Master. With another 562,000 entries (USD 4.02 million) banked, the hit has now reached 6.5 million admissions (USD 43.97 million) and may have just enough juice left for one more milestone.

US sci-fi Passengers, with Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt, had a lacklustre opening in third place with 351,000 tickets sold (USD 2.49 million) over the weekend and 504,000 viewers (USD 3.47 million) in its first five days.

Down 47% in week three was Hollywood animation Sing, which brought in 183,000 spectators (USD 1.22 million) to bring its haul to a healthy 1.59 million admissions (USD 10.16 million). Just behind it was the Russian animation The Snow Queen 3: Fire and Ice, which opened with 170,000 viewers (USD 1.11 million), giving it 242,000 entries (USD 1.52 million) since its Wednesday start.

Among local starters, there were comedy-drama BECAUSE I LOVE YOU in sixth, which had a soft start with 146,000 viewers (USD 1 million) and 246,000 entries overall (USD 1.64 million) despite its star cast, and KIM Tae-yong’s drama MISBEHAVIOR which opened in tenth with 47,000 entries (USD 340,000) and 86,000 admissions (USD 597,000) in total.

With no major contender opening in the coming week, the top of the chart may see little change by the end of the week.
