The Real Fantastic Film Festival, formed by former programmers and staff of the Puchon International Film Festival, is scheduled to be held in central Seoul from July 14-23. With a $200,000 budget raised from sponsors and onlinesupporters, RealFanta will present 64 films, including its centerpiece section of science fiction films from the former Soviet Union and Eastern European bloc. Titled "Marx Attacks!", the section was co-organized with with the Neuchatel festival of Switzerland, and the festival's opening film will be the 1924 Soviet feature Alelita by Yakov Portazanov. Other sections include a selection of seven recent Korean films such as Marathon, Blood Rain, Crying Fist and A BittersweetLife, plus the Fantastic Planet section with 15 features from around the world. A special screening will also present some recently-discovered newsreels that depict Korea in the late 1930s and in the mid 1940s, following its independence from Japan. More information about the festival can be found at http://www.realfanta.org. Organizers of this year's festival describe the event as a means of calling attention to the problematic leadership structure of the PiFan festival. If RealFanta is a success, the team is holding out the possibility of setting up a permanent home in a different city in future years.
