Sharing the Award with Hou Hsiao-hsien, a World-renowned Film Director

Kim Dongho, Chairperson of Gangneung International Film Festival (GIFF), will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award at the MIFFest (Malaysia International Film Festival). The Golden Global Award is an award ceremony taking place right after the closing of the Malaysian International Film Festival, which will be held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on July 16, 2022. This year, Chairperson Kim Dongho and Taiwan’s world-renowned film director Hou Hsiao-hsien will share the award. 

Chairperson Kim Dongho has received high praises while working as a public official for the Culture and Public Information and became the Vice Minister of Culture for more than 30 years from 1961, helping to establish various cultural policies. After retiring from public office, he was the main character in launching the Busan International Film Festival in 1996, serving as the festival director and chairperson of the board, contributing greatly to the development of Asian films as well as Korean films. In recognition of his achievements worldwide, Kim Dongho received the Silver Certificate of Merit of Korea (2005), the City of Paris Medal (2006), the UNESCO Fellini Medal (2007), the Officier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Korean National Assembly Awards (2011), the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Udine Far East Film Festival in Italy (2013), the Légion d’Honneur Chevalier in France (2014), etc. 

Joanne Goh, the founder and chairperson of MIFFest, explained, “Chairperson Kim Dongho is a founder of both Busan and Gangneung International Film Festivals, and also he has left numerous achievements that have been praised throughout the film industry,” as a reason for awarding Chairperson Kim. Winners of previous Lifetime Achievement Awards include Director Ann Hui, Actor Hung Kam Po from Hong Kong, etc.
