2018 Asian Film Academy Announces Faculty Members and Final List of Participants

24 Participants from 28 Countries, Including Thailand, Taiwan, Singapore and the Philippines



The Asian Film Academy (AFA), which has for mission to discover young Asian filmmakers, announced the faculty members and the final list of 24 participants for its 14th program.

LOU Ye, who portrays the cataclysmic present of China’s frenetic cities in films such as Summer Palace (2006), Spring Fever (2009), Mystery (2012) and Blind Massage (2014), has been named dean. The directing teacher will be TAN Chui Mui, who directed Year Without A Summer (2010) among many others in Malaysia, while the cinematography teacher will be Artur ZURAWSKI, a Polish cinematographer, director, and still photographer. 

This year, AFA has selected 24 participants from 13 countries, including Thailand, Taiwan, Singapore, the Philippines, Nepal, Myanmar, Mongolia, Malaysia, Kazakhstan, Indonesia, Hong Kong, China, and Cambodia. “374 people from 28 different countries applied for the 14th AFA”, said the organizers. “The largest numbers of applicants came from India, followed by the Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore, and Indonesia, where their film industries have shown outstanding growth.” The AFA also pointed out that this year will have the highest rate of female participants, with 8 women chosen among the 24 finalists.

These 24 hopefuls will attend a program for 18 days from September 27th to October 14th, and all AFA graduates will qualify to apply for the Incubating Fund, which provides financial support for an independent feature film. There are also several scholarship funds available to the participants. After a pitching competition held during the workshop, one participant will be selected to join a four-week long workshop at the New York Film Academy. ARRI, German’s leading manufacturer of professional motion picture equipment, will provide two selected participants with the opportunity to visit the ARRI Main Office in Munich, Germany, and participate in the ARRI Training Program. In addition, two winners will attend a 5-day long Film Immersion Program in Los Angeles, USA, and the Asia Pacific Screen Awards (APSA) in Brisbane, Australia.
