JK YOUN Enters Space Race with RETURN

Rescue Drama from JK Films Due in Theaters in 2019

Blockbuster filmmaker JK YOUN has announced that he will direct the space rescue drama Return (translated title) through his production company JK Film. The film will chronicle an astronaut’s struggle to return home after being stranded in a space station following an accident.

Director YOUN stated that he has wanted to make a film in space since his childhood and felt that the technology in the Korean market has finally caught up to make it a reality. Scripting has been completed and casting is currently underway, with a production start date eyeing towards the end of the year. Return is expected to be in theaters in 2019.

The project is the third major space-set Korean project to have been announced in recent weeks, along with The Moon, from Along with the Gods: The Two Worlds (2017) director KIM Yong-hwa, and Lightning Arc, from A Werewolf Boy (2012) filmmaker JO Sung-hee.

YOUN is one of the most successful Korean directors of all time, having become the first filmmaker to helm two films that crossed the ten million admissions mark. The first was the disaster drama Haeundae, which soared past 11 million viewers in the summer of 2009, which was followed by the epic drama Ode to My Father, which became the second most successful film of all time in the winter of 2014 when it accrued over 14 million admissions, though it has since dropped to third place on the all-time rankings.

The director’s company JK Film is also responsible for several other hit titles, including The Himalayas (2015), Confidential Assignment (2017) and Keys to the Heart. Their upcoming titles include the hostage thriller The Negotiation with Hyun-bin and SON Ye-jin.
