THE NET Catches Top Prize at French Political Film Festival

KIM Ki-duk’s Film Awarded at Inaugural Festival du Film Politique

KIM Ki-duk has added another award to his trophy chest after scooping up the top prize at the inaugural Festival du Film Politique (International Festival of Political Films) with his 22nd film The Net. The event, which was held in Porto-Vecchio, a town on the French island Corsica, took place over October 27-29. The Net was one of six titles taking part in the new festival’s competition section.

The Net chronicles the ordeal of a North Korean fisherman who accidentally drifts into South Korean waters when his net gets caught in his engine. He is taken into custody with intelligence officers who brutally grill him for information, yet when he is eventually released and allowed to return home, he is met with the same mistrust and harsh treatment upon his return.

Playing the fisherman was RYOO Seung-bum, known for works such as The Unjust (2010) and The Berlin File (2013). RYOO is also among the cast of the next film from director KIM, The Time of Humans, which recently wrapped filming.

The awarded film debuted at the Venice International Film Festival last year, the auteur’s seventh time at the festival where he previously earned the Golden Lion for Pieta in 2012. Back in March, the film earned the Best Asian Film Award from Fantasporto, the Oporto International Film Festival in Portugal.
