THE DAY AFTER Director Begins Production on 22nd Film
Prolific auteur
Hong Sangsoo and his muse
KIM Min-hee started production at the beginning of September on what will be their fifth collaboration, which is the director’s 22nd film overall. The film’s storyline is being kept under wraps but it will co-star
JUNG Jin-young,
KWON Hae-hyo and
KIM Saebyuk, who have all featured in other Hong films this year.
2017 was an especially busy year for Hong, as he premiered three new films at the Berlin and Cannes Film Festivals, all of which featured KIM. The first was
On the Beach at Night Alone, for which KIM earned the Silver Bear for Best Actress at the Berlin International Film Festival. A few months later Hon scored a rare double invite to the Cannes Film Festival with both
The Day After, which screened in competition, and
Claire’s Camera, which was invited as a special screening and co-starred Isabelle Huppert.
Hong and KIM began their working relationship in 2015 with
Right Now, Wrong Then, which co-starred
JUNG Jae-young. The film debuted at the Locarno International Film Festival, where it earned the Golden Leopard, its top prize. KIM won the Best Actress prize from the Busan Film Critics Association Awards for her part in the film.
