Prison Drama Leads EFM Slate for Korean Distributor

Going into the European Film Market, Showbox has sealed several deals on its upcoming thriller The Prison. The debut film by NA Hyun stars KIM Rae-won as an ex-cop who winds up in jail only to find that an inmate played by HAN Suk-kyu runs a major crime syndicate from inside.

Originally launched at AFM last November, the film has gone to Well Go USA for North America, JBG Pictures for Australia, New Zealand and the UK, Lemon Tree for China, Viva Communication for the Philippines and Movie Cloud for Taiwan. Showbox held a market screening for The Prison on Saturday during EFM.

Showbox has also brought several more titles to Berlin this year. In addition to last year’s hit comedy LUCK-KEY with YOO Hae-jin and the fantasy drama VANISHING TIME: A BOY WHO RETURNED with GANG Dong-won, the company has several new films in its lineup.

These include the election drama The Mayor from Moby Dick (2011) director PARK In-jae, starring CHOI Min-shik (Old Boy, 2003) as the mayor of Seoul seeking a third term in office. The film is due out in the second quarter of 2017.

Also out in the next quarter will be RV: Resurrected Victims, the new film from Friend (2001) director KWAK Kyung-taek. The supernatural thriller features KIM Rae-won of The Prison as a prosecutor looking for his mother’s killer only to be suddenly attacked by his dead mother.

Further down the line, Showbox will release the 1980s period drama A Taxi Driver at some point in the summer. The new film from Secret Reunion (2010) director JANG Hun features SONG Kang-ho playing the eponymous character driving around a German journalist played by Thomas Kretschmann who covers the Gwangju Democratization Movement.
