Cannes-Invited Documentary Bows in France in February

Jero YUN’s documentary Mrs.B., A North Korean Woman is set to receive a French theatrical release on February 22nd of this year. The film, which debuted at the Jeonju International Film Festival last year, and went to take part in the Association du Cinéma Indépendant pour sa Diffusion (ACID) lineup, held alongside the Cannes Film Festival last year, is YUN’s debut work.

The film concerns a North Korean woman who left her country ten years ago to move to China in the hopes of making money. Yet despite intending to return to North Korea after a year, her broker forcibly sold her to a client in the countryside.

YUN’s film screened at several other events, including the DMZ International Documentary Film Festival and the Zurich International Film Festival, where it picked up the Grand Prize for Best Documentary. Beyond that, it was also awarded the Silver George for the Best Documentary from the Moscow International Film Festival during the summer.

2016 was a big year for director YUN, as he was also invited to the Director’s Fortnight section of the Cannes Film Festival with his short film Hitchhiker. YUN is also preparing a narrative feature version of Mrs.B., A North Korean Woman entitled Ma Mère, which was selected to be part of a slate of Asia-set co-productions from the French production house Zorba.
