US Critics Circles Heap Awards on THE HANDMAIDEN

17 Prizes and Counting for PARK Chan-wook’s Latest

Though the film is ineligible for the foreign language competition of the next Academy Awards, that hasn’t stopped PARK Chan-wook’s latest film The Handmaiden from blazing a trail through the 2016 North American awards circuit. To date, the film has picked up 13 wins for best foreign language film, two for production design, one for cinematography and one for adapted screenplay.

Based on Sarah Waters’ novel Fingersmith, The Handmaiden stars KIM Min-hee, HA Jung-woo and newcomer KIM Tae-ri in a tale that takes place in Korea and Japan in the 1930s. The film bowed in competition at the Cannes Film Festival, where it earned the Vulcan Award of the Technical Artist for production designer RYU Seong-hee.

The Handmaiden has won the foreign language film awards from film critics groups in Boston, Chicago, Dallas-Fort Worth, Indiana, Kansas City, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, New York, Phoenix, San Francisco and Utah. It also picked up the same prize from the Boston online, New York online and Southeastern film critics groups.

In technical departments, where it has faced off with Hollywood’s Oscar hopefuls, the film has picked up the Best Production Design awards from the Los Angeles and San Francisco groups for RYU Seong-hee, Best Cinematography for CHUNG Chung-hoon from Boston and the Best Adapted Screenplay prize from Chicago for writers PARK Chan-wook and CHUNG Seo-kyung.

The film has been nominated at numerous other events included many that have yet to be held. During the 2016 awards season, PARK’s film is far and away the most awarded foreign film, outstripping favorites such as Elle and Toni Erdmann.
